Cash Back Bonus Roundup for Fall

[Monday, September 30th, 2013]

Credit cards with rotating bonus categories are popular with consumers who like to get rewarded for different purchases each season. While most credit cards offer unlimited 1% cash back, rotating rewards cards give an extra bonus amount in a particular category each quarter, usually geared toward seasonal spending. In summer, gas and hotel rewards are common. In spring, it’s home improvement and gardening. Fall is the time for holiday shopping bonuses.

Here is the roundup of current and upcoming rewards categories for a few popular credit cards:

  • Chase Freedom: Through the end of September, cardholders will get 5% cash back at gas stations, theme parks, and Kohl’s department stores. Beginning in October and through the end of 2013, cardholders get that extra 5% bonus cash back on Amazon.com orders and department stores—perfect for holiday shopping.
The rewards are capped at $75 per quarter, so the first $1,500 spent earns the extra bonus. After that, all purchases earn 1% cash back.
  • Discover:Discover card is still running their summer promotion of 5% back at all gas stations. Through the end of September road-trippers and commuters can enjoy that bonus on the first $1,500 spent, up to a maximum of $75 cash back per quarter. October 1 marks the beginning of the fourth quarter, when credit cards change up their rewards calendar. From October 1 to December 31, Discover cardholders will get 5% back on all online purchases. That means holiday shoppers can do all their errands online and get bonus rewards of up to $75.
  • Citi Dividend Platinum Select: Travelers who want to squeeze in another vacation before the end of September can get 5% cash back at Hilton hotels and on car rentals through the end of the month. They’ll also get 5% back at theme parks and movie theaters. Starting in October, there will be another 5% cash back category.
Citi caps its cash back bonus at $300 per year. That means the first $6,000 spent in these categories earns 5% back, and then there are no more cash back rewards for the year. Other cards cap the cash back bonus quarterly.
