New Programs Let People Use Credit Card Rewards Anywhere

[Wednesday, December 18th, 2013]

When it comes to credit card rewards, flexibility has always been key. People like to be able to choose how they use their loyalty points and use them in a wide variety of ways. Now two major credit card issuers are letting cardholders use their rewards like they use their credit cards, making them more flexible than ever.

Citi lets people turn ThankYou Points into account numbers

Citi announced a new program earlier this month. With this new Rewards Account Number feature, customers can create an account numberthat resembles  a credit card number, and assign their ThankYou Points to that account. Then they use the account to pay for purchases online just as they would use their credit card. They can also use the number to pay for purchases made by phone.

Citi cardholders can combine ThankYou Points across accounts. That means if they have both a debit card and a credit card with Citi, both accounts will accrue ThankYou Points that can be combined and added to one of these new rewards account. They just need to log into their account online to transfer the points. Customers can choose the number of points to use.

AmEx gets in on the game too

American Express also lets cardholders use their Membership Rewards points anywhere that takes American Express card, using the American Express mobile app on their phone or tablet. The app is free, and cardholders with at least 1,000 Membership Rewards points can use those points towards any purchase that is at least $1.

To use the pay with points option, cardholders use their American Express card to pay in the usual way, then open the app and tap, “use points” for the purchase they have just made. The number of points they choose will be automatically deducted from their account and put toward the purchase. In this way, cardholders can use points to pay for part of a purchase or all of it, and they can choose how many points they want to use toward a certain purchase.

With the advent of these programs, credit card rewards are acting more and more like cash and gaining flexibility in the way they can be used. Now people who used points exclusively for frequent flyer miles, cash back, gift cards or merchandise have another way to use those credit card rewards.
